“A war of keywords…”

Over 484,000 Google keyword searches a month from around the world, including at least 54,000 searches in the U.K, give results reated to Islamist extremist material, according to a report into the online presence of jihadism.
The study found that of the extremist content accessed through these specific keyword searches, 44% were explicitly violent, 36% wwere non-violent and 20% included political Islamist in content, the last being non-violent but disseminated by known Islamist groups with political ambitions.
The study exposes the role of the “search engine” in drawing people to extremist jihadi material on the web.
It argues the role of the search engine – a field dominated by Google – has been a blind spot that has been missed by those seeking to measure and counter extremist messages on the internet.
